I quit drinking over two months ago. I found out that I should be taking b12 supplements and promptly went to the pharmacy and bought a bottle. Thinking myself deficient I took two 100 mcg of b12. Is it too much? I was drinking heavily for 3 years and thought it would be okay. What should be my RDA?

Since b vitamins are water-soluble there really isn't a danger in "over supplementing". However be careful with fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E and K) which are fat soluble vitamins and will accumulate in your fat cells. If you've ever known someone who binges on carrots they will soon get orange skin due to beta-carotene (vitamin a) overload.

Most people do not need supplements. If you are eating a well-rounded diet, you do not need to supplement B12. You don't need a lot of B12.
