If you still have the cheque, you can return it to the issuing bank and then they can cancel it and return your money.

The only way a stop payment will be issued is due to fraud or theft. If that is the case, call the issuing bank (where you received the cheque) and give them the police report number. Without that, they will not stop payment on the cheque as that is the point of a certified cheque.

If the check is stolen, then the issuer has the right to stop payment. That is why the bank will issue the check with an extra copy - for the records of the issuer.

There have been instances also of fraudulent bank checks, which look very realistic, but are not worth the paper they are written on. Be careful.
