Because Nothing Exists Out Of Nothing, You Have To Have A Creator To Create Things, A Designer, I Don't See Factual Proof That Evolution Is Working If Monkeys Can't Turn Themselves Into Human Beings Now, Explain That To Me. Why Does Things Not Change Unless Somebody Screws Up, Scientists Causing Mutations, Explain That To Me. If Evolution Is So Real, What Caused The Big Bang Theory And Who Was Around During That Time To Prove It, Why If Evolution Is The Foundation Of Creation, Why Do People Have To Cause So Many Problems Having To Defend Their Beliefs?
I Can Shoot This Down In So Many Ways, I Can Make A Mockery Out Of You And All Those Who Believes In This Crap! I Would Have Factual Proof, They Say Seeing Is Believing, Look Around, Proofs In Everyones Faces!

First off, I just love the ignorance that is so blatant in some of the responses. It's amazing to me how you feel you actually have enough to base such broad statements on how you think that all Christians and southerners are stupid idiots. I guess really they are just irrational attitudes of hostility towards groups like Christians or southerns, which in case you were wondering actually is the definition of prejudice.
As to the actual question though. I think the biggest reason that people do not believe evolution is because there are misconceptions about what evolution really is. It doesn't make them illiterate or stupid, it just means their perceptions and beliefs are based on something that just isn't true, sort of like the commenter above who thinks all southerns are illiterate. One of the biggest misconceptions is that humans came from monkeys. I don't know where people get it from, but that is what some people believe that evolution is. They are wrong and could really use someone to correct them, but people will usually go about in such an attacking way that they have no idea of really correcting the person's misconception.

"Yeah, it is just way too complicated. (notice I spelled too correctly, memorize your word list tonight.) People have the ability and choice to believe in whatever they choose. I have a masters degree in nursing and science and I believe in creation. I guess I'm just a dumb girl, huh? "
I agree with this statement. .
Christianity does not consist of people who are dummies as you think.
There are so many questions on Y!A that does the same thing you do and that is to generalize and group people into one large category and assume they are all the same way or believe all the same thing. Stop generalizing!! You don't actually personally know each and every person who is a creationist and know for a fact that they are illiterate, do you? No, you don't!
You believe whatever you want to believe. Just let me believe what I want to, because you do not have the right to tell me what to believe. You have the right to tell me your opinion and your belief, but that's it!

Evolution doesn't really have a story to it compared to the Bible. People like stories. Stories like Adam and Eve, David vs Goliath, and Jesus are more entertaining to some people and thus easier to take in. Whereas evolution has all these complex scientific terms and for some people it just doesn't stick.

They believe that it will be harder for science to prove evolution than it was to prove the Earth was not flat--Standing on pillars or immovable as the Bible states-(1 Samuel 2:8)-They had to eat humble pie on that one. They didn't like the taste!!---So don't expect them to admit being wrong again in a hurry.Mind you---the silent majority of Christians DO accept the proof of evolution--it's the vocal minority that are holding fast to their story!

illiterate? I don't see you following proper English grammatical rules correctly....
The theory of evolution is too simple to misunderstand in my opinion. But I have a different reason for not believing in evolution than "it's too complex".

Nobody should BELIEVE in evolution or any other scientific theory. Belief is the realm of religion. Belief has no role in science.
You can study the theory of evolution, you can understand it's meaning, learn about the evidence supporting it, find out about the unresolved question regarding it, come up with interesting hypotheses based on it even try to refute it. But please, do not BELIEVE in it!

I think that hundreads of millions of people believe in evolution.
I think there is a huge number of Christians (a kind of 'silent majority') who believe in evolution and see it as the handy work of God. Its just the mechanics of God creating the world. And its not even an issue worthy of much debate.

Evolution is a challenging subject. A basic high school education barely scratches the surface. If someone leaves high school and is not convinced, that is reasonable. The fact that so many people feel the need to attack evolution with lies (and do not know why they are lies) shows that they never made the effort.

I think it would behoove you to perfect your grammar in your questions before you criticize others' literacy or lack thereof.
I think part of it was that Thomas Huxley used evolution to try to disprove the existence of God. It does no such thing, but the fight started a century and a half ago and people are still having trouble winding down.
