This is a question for Christians only...

I'm trying to feel out whether most Christians lean toward 6,000 years or 4.55 billion or something else entirely....

The empirical answer is 4.5 billion years for the earth and 15 billion for the universe, however I choose to interpret the question as "How long has the CONCEPT of the world, or the word 'world' itself, been present in the human mind?" When considered from this angle we have to look at how long mankind has possessed language, words, and definitions. Our best guess is that language and words developed no earlier than 10,000 years ago. If that is the case, the IDEA of the universe is only several thousand years old. So it is possible to argue that the world as we understand it is not that old, since there needs to be a subject and an object in order to define reality.

I hold with the old earth view. When we were in Israel, we saw tels (big piles of cities on top of one another, one age after the next) and the oldest cities in the pile were supposed to be 10,000 years old. Too many people let this issue be too big of a deal. I don't have a particular attachment to 4.55 billion years as the age of the earth, but the universe itself should be at least old enough for the light from the farthest star we can see to reach earth.
