I just got a Boxer puppy a few weeks ago. Whenever I come home, he is so happy to see me, his tail goes crazy. I am just wondering why that is.

A dog's tail is like your smile. You automatically smile when you are pleased but you CAN control it if you want. A dog CAN control his tail -- if you've ever seen a dog playing and trying not to wag, it's very funny.

I'm actually not sure WHY a dog's tail wags -- any more than I know why we smile. A dog's tail expresses a LOT more than pleasure -- he uses it in many way to communicate. A stiff, slowly wagging tail is a sign a dog might attack. I guess it's just the way dogs evolved.

Enjoy your puppy!

Their tails are much like the human face that smiles, frowns, grimaces, sneers etc and it is a visual communication to other people that tells them how you feel

How a dog holds it's tails communicates to other dogs what the dog is feeling , the wag says I am happy to see you, tail tucked tightly under the legs says I am scared, a tail held out low stiffly waggingrepresents a warning to stay away, erect stiffly and flagging can express dominance, held down and relaxed , expresses calmness, because dogs have limited vocal speech, more parts of their bodys provide parts of communication like a ridge of hair on their back that lifts when excited or angry, different ear positons become language, as welll as face

They have a gland near their butt that secretes pheramones, which are like chemical signals to tell what kind of mood they are in. When they first greet an animal or person they are not hostile to, they will wave their tails around to spread the smell, and the other dog will usually sniff their butt. The butt sniffing and tail wagging are actually related and are a scent-based and sight-based form of communication.

They use their tail for communication, like their eyes ... It's how they communicate how they feel, what they are thinking, their intentions etc.. They can't tail, they have to do something to communicate with one another.

Because they can't say "I love you," and thanks for giving me a "forever home."
