They're sure THINKING about it
The Selective Service System is testing its draft machinery in case Congress and President George W. Bush need it,
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/20/selective.service/index.html
So if you're a male between the ages of 18 and 26, get ready
You might just get head shaved, treated like crap, ordered around and told to kill people in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan or anywhere else trigger happy George might want to put you.

Currently there is no draft but it wouldn't take very long for one to be made. Some policies go into effect in a few weeks. However, if you consider the amount of people joining the military because there are no jobs out there for them, you might consider it a draft in a sense.
So many of our National Guard resources are deployed in foreign countries that it would take about 4 years after Mr. Bush leaves office (the whole first term of the next President) for the country to get back to pre-9/11 readiness.
If a draft was made it would most likely follow the stipulations of Selective Service so you can use that as a model.
Everyone has pretty much said most of what the rules are, but do note that appearing at a draft station is mandatory but you don't always get chosen and you can also refuse on non-combatant status, however you must still appear at the station to provide proof.

The advice to check out www.sss.gov is a good tip.
The rules DO exist, and they are quite clear and have been evolving with each past draft.
There is no current draft. There is no current plan to return to the draft. A return to the draft requires congress to pass a law in both houses, and then the president must sign.
The draft exercises occur on a regular basis every few years, reading anything into them is a mistake.
There IS a surviving son exemption, it is available only during congressionally declared wars. Thus is has not been used since the 1940s.
All 18 yr old males must register with SSS.
IF there is a draft, you are pretty much safe if you make it through the year you turn 20.
IF all 20 yr olds are called in a given year (unlikely) then they take 21-26, then 19, then 18 last of all.
There are dozens of administrative claims and four judgemental claims you can make that could get you out of your draft obligation. You would receive information on all of this with your draft notice, and a local area office would help you make your claim for exemption or deferment. Your claim would be heard and decided by a group of 5 local citizens who are trained each year by SSS.

Under the current Selective Service System.
There is no " Only Child " provision.
There is a provision for anyone who lost a Parent in combat.
But that applies to all the children, not just an only child.
The draft will start with those turning 20 years old, during the year of the draft.
And proceed upward until it gets to those turning 28 in the year of the draft.
At the current time, those under 20 years old and older than 28, are not eligible to be drafted.
I provided a link to the Selective Service web page, so you can go read the rules yourself.
And contrary to popular belief, during a draft, everyone is not drafted.
They only draft enough people to fill the manning requirements if there are not enough volunteers.
During the Vietnam era, only about 10% of those eligible for the draft, were actually drafted.

As of right now there is no military draft in the US. In the past there was a lottery and the drew numbers for each birthday of a year and if you had a low number you were called. I have not heard anything for sure that there is any real talk about it. Most of the ones that get called up are the 18 to 21's. But you never know if the draft gets started again where they would start.

There are no 'rules' because Congress has not written legislation for a draft. The 'rules' for a draft will be part of that legislation. So unless the Democrats have their way - you have nothing to worry about.

You STILL have to register with selective service, but that's no big deal.
There IS NO draft,.
What you heard about being an only so, to carry on the family blood line is a myth.

For a military draft one must have respect for those who are in charge of running the country. Since America is running out of money, petroleum, clean food, and basic economic needs, where will those who are drafted be sent? Will they have appropriate training or just sent to Iraq and Afghanistan to die? As for rules - right now we don't have a draft, but it won't take long to get the laws passed to get one started. Remember the 2001 US (Un) Patriot Act? That took less that two months from conception to law. And we Americans just sat around and gave up ALL of our US Constitutionally guaranteed rights to privacy - in the name of terrorism!

The US doesn't have a draft as of yet. It's still all volunteer. So only children can go in if they choose to.
But all males 18-25 need to register with the Selective Service.
Only living sons of veterans killed in a war can be excused, as well as only children, if there is no other family to support the parent.
The age limit for army service is now 45.

There has not been a military draft in the US since 1973, and it is doubtful that we will change from an all volunteer force in the forseeable future.
