i wanna get engaged with my long term girlfriend, how should i go about this?

Buy her a ring and ask her. Or, take her to pick out a ring shortly after asking her. Don't ask without a ring, that just looks cheap. I'm not saying this because I'm materialistic, I was asked without a ring once, and when I said yes, he never thought to go buy one afterwards. You have to get a licence from your local council.
