Beloved, my whole concern was to write to you in regard to our common salvation. [But] I found it necsessary and was impelled to write you and urgently appeal to and exhort [you] to contend for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints [ the faith which is the sum of Christian belief which was delivered verbeally to the holy people of God].

Verse 4 holds the key. I believe they were thinking it was ok to sin, because of grace. But Jude is warning to stick to what had been taught to them by the apostles, not by those who had crept in.

To defend the word of Christ- and stick to the word of God when it comes to our faith- knowing full well that our faith is in Jesus Christ alone, and that there is salvation in no other. Yes stand up for the truth of Jesus Christ! (which is christianity, one who is born again in Christ Jesus)

"Contend" for the faith means to fight to expand it, and to build upon it where it is in a fledgling condition, and to argue for and defend it in philosophical and theological debate, with those who are arguing against it. It means to stand up for it, and to put it forward, unapologetically, in the market place of ideas.
