The ladder was actually on top of the Empire State Building and was propped up against the radio mast on the top.
This bloke was at the very top, cleaning the cobwebs off the top of the mast because the people on the 753981736th floor couldn't hear Top of the Pops very clearly - when he slipped.
Down and down he fell, arms and legs everywhere, screaming as he went. But he was lucky, because he was wearing braces on his trousers.
As he hurtled past the 73619047634rd floor his braces got caught on a rusty nail. He plummeted down another 56 floors until the elastic would stretch no more. Up he went, higher and higher, shooting past the radio mast on the top, passing the BA flight BA67 on its way to Peru, past the moon until he couldn't hold his breath anymore.
He was now in deep outer space and he let out his entire lung capacity of air. This, of course, acted as a jet engine and it propelled him through space 10000 times faster than the speed of light. Past Mars, past Saturn, into orbit round Pluto and back again all in the blink of a donkeys eye.
Still travelling faster than my wife's nagging he shot back to earth, landing on top of the Empire State Building, just as his mate turned round as said, "Fancy a cup of tea?"
Or something like that.
