It depends on how much you like your GT bike, and what you define by not too expensive bike.

You could get a Shimano XT laced to Sun Ryhno Lites for about 150 to 200 bucks for a nice, reliable but not too fancy wheelset, up to 1,000 or so for Chris King hubset laced to Mavic or DT Swiss rims, or some Industry 9 wheels laced to whatever rim you want. So... there is a big price gap between both extremes. But, wheels do make a big difference, specially if your old wheelset is not that good.

And, what do you mean by not too expensive mountain bike? Again, we could be looking for a $500 hardtail up to a 1,500 bucks full suspension bike.

Maybe search for prices on both options (search for both bikes and wheels around your budget), and see what you find.

If you keep your GT bike, and buy another, you could have a spare one, which is good if one of your friends decide to join you.
