If you buy a new computer from Dell or off of the rack at Best Buy, it will probably come with Works. Windows also has a built-in program called WordPad. There is a completely free Office Suite called Open Office...many people think it is as good or better than Microsoft Office.

XP comes with wordpad but i think it's probably going to be way too basic for what you may want since you are talking about MS Word and Works.

Open Office is a free, legitimate, and legal alternative to Microsoft Office. It is compatible with microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, ect files, and even the layout is extremely similar.

worth checking out.

If you are looking for a complete and free office productivity suite, try downloading Open Office. www.openoffice.org It not only has a complete word processor, but it also comes with a graphics editor, a presentation program, a spread sheet, and more. And once again, it's free.

It will also open most all MS file extensions.
