Don't worry at all. Only 20% of people in Wales speak Welsh and those all speak English as well. It depends what part of Wales you're going to, but in many places you'd actually find it quite hard to find someone to speak Welsh to! In some places they may speak to you in Welsh in shops, but they'll switch to English as soon as they realise you don't understand. Have a fantastic holiday - Wales is a lovely country with friendly people, so I really hope you like it here.

Helena - Welsh isn't "semi-dead". It is a growing language. And the Welsh, particularly in North Wales do use it in everyday conversation. I should know - my wife is Welsh- get her together with her mother and sister and I can go all day without understanding a word they are saying (which is rather pleasant).
The only Welsh I know is "ara-deg" (not sure of spelling) which my mother in law shouts at me at regular intervals whenever I'm driving her somewhere.

They speak English in Wales!!! Even those that speak Welsh all the time speak English!
Welsh is a gaelic language and believe me they aren't the easiest to learn!! If you can't pronounce the LL correctly forget it!!!

Welsh is a semi-dead language - some Welsh people can speak it, but it is not normally used in conversation. The only reason the road signs are bilingual is because they got a bit uppity about the language being lost a few years back.
Hope you can understand the language - most Americans have trouble!

I went there in 2001.
I drove to Snowdonia and around the black hills.
I hardly spoke to anyone the whole time.
I think they only speak Welsh when they dont want to talk to strangers.
