Can you really argue that the bible makes more sense than this book? I think not. What did you make of it? If you don't agree with it, please explain which parts and why.

Nexus6: How exactly does this question "ridicule Christians"? All I'm doing is asking for an opinion.

Cheryllynn: I think you're missing the point. Even Richard Dawkins himself would certainly disagree with much that Darwin wrote. There was a great deal that Darwin didn't know: the theory of evolution has been greatly refined since The Origin of Species was published.

I think you'll also find it hard to produce an intelligent atheist who has no criticism of The God Delusion.

That's what science is about: questioning, not just accepting things on face value.

even even with the truth that i'm an atheist, i have not study God delusion, nor do I intend to. i recognize Dawkins' books on evolution, and that i desire he had stuck to those particularly of venturing into the atheist/non secular polemic with God delusion. everybody might want to study up on differing evaluations with a view to be uncovered to new thoughts, yet i ought to stop short of any particular books that are "ought to reads". And there are surely more effective needed philosophy books then God delusion.

It's a pretty decent book but it's subjects fall flat of getting to the real point of the actual "God Delusion". I think if you really want to get a good in depth look at the falsehood of religion, there are better books for it. Sam Harris' book "The End of Faith" covers the topic better than Dawkins ever could. He has better points, ones that have better credibility at proving religion to be false. Dawkins tends to stick to topics that are relative when Harris goes for explanation with hard fact.

Don't get me wrong, Dawkins is brilliant. He's one of the best scientists today, but, on the subject of Religion he's not the best spokesman. His ideas on Evolutionary biology and psychology are just great and I highly suggest that everyone read into his works but stick to Harris for this topic.

You obviously don't agree with the Christian faith - which really is your choice and you are both welcome and entitled to it.

What I can't understand is why you feel the need to ridicule Christians.

You have read a book which proves to you that no god exists. That is what you looked for - proof - or more accurately - disproof.

I am not involved in any religion and I would never share my beliefs with anyone - they are private - but I cannot understand why people on Yahoo Answers like to ridicule people who believe in a god.

Faith isn't about arguing a point - it's about hope - and who really is arrogant enough to say they have "proof" either way?

The real truth is that nobody, not Atheist, Christian, Muslim, Jew or anyone knows the answer.

Added in reply:

In your question you say "Can you really argue that the bible makes more sense than this book? I think not."

This appears to me to be ridiculing the bible, which the Christian faith is based upon, ergo an attack on Christianity.

From your comment to me this was not your intention and therefore I apologise for my misinterpretation of the sentence.

I didn't think it worth reading, Dawkins has already made it clear that he despises belief in God, I've already read less biased books, written by agnostics and less hostile atheists.

Couldn't find it in the library, wasn't prepared to waste money buying it, spent the money on my brother's birthday present.

"The Dawkins Delusion" seems far more to my taste, I'm hoping my library will get a copy soon. Have any "God Delusion"-bashing atheists read it?

Edit:
I answered the main question asked, I haven't read it.
I stated my reasons for not reading it, so it's not "blind faith".
I just consider the author to be too biased to be worth reading, it would be like reading a NF brochure about non-Caucasians.

I would predict that the number of atheist who have read the bible to be greater than number of Christians who have read The God Delusion.

To be completely honest, I have not read it.

However, the more I am on Y!A and the more Atheists I come into contact with, the more I see the need to have a broad understanding of the world.

If I am going to refute Atheism, I need to read it's foundational text.

*sigh* I'm not looking forward to it, but I guess I could view it as homework- a necessary evil :-p

No, I haven't read it. I have seen the man interviewed and been to his website to read reviews and comments.

I've seen a few youtube things on him...and frankly I think he's an idiot. I don't mean he's not "smart" but he so smug and egotistical...I guess he worships himself.

Richard Dawkins has not come up with anything new, nor has he been able to crack the faith of true believers. The only people interested in his theories are those who already agree...or those who have weak faith to begin with.

Haven't read it, no need to; I've seen him a number of times try to explain his beliefs and found him a little too desperate to disprove the existence of God..
I will listen to view's from people who are reasonable and rational, but not from people who come over as slightly hysterical...

What RD doesn't know God loves and adores him and longs for a relationship with him...one day hopefully God's mercy will bring RD to a place of humility...good question (more tea)

Edit: some great answers here and quite surprising...

Believe it or not, while I'm essentially atheist, I have found much better reading than Dawkins on the subject in the past. Dawkins just got more press...
