If the SNP join forces with the Conservatives in Scotland it will be a miracle. I believe I am right in saying that the Conservatives will have 17 seats in the new Scottish Parliament due to the mathematics of proportional representation and this might give SNP a working majority if they can con the Greens to join them as well.
The Scots appear to have a kind of pathological hatred for the Conservatives who they regard as the traditional 'English Ruling Class' party and just wont vote for them. This has caused a massive imbalance in Scottish politics in that all the voters who have natural right wing tendencies (and this must logically encompass up to 50% of the population), have only 'left of centre' parties to choose from. The SNP may kid themselves that they are 'left of centre' but they would lose a large percentage of their votes if a genuine Scottish 'right of centre' party were to be formed.
Yes, if Scotland gained independence then England would return to its natural 'right of centre' majority, and hooray for that.

SNP is for Scottish Independence, and it looks like that's going to be achieved; going by what I've read in several newspapers, but of course, I'm skeptical of what I read, so I will believe it when it happens. I'll believe Scotland is Independent when it actually happens.
So I cannot see why the SNP would join with the Conservatives.
Or vice-versa. I don't think the Conservatives want an Independent Scotland.
IF is the operative word in your question; as in 'imagine if..'
Wales and England have such strong ties, that I'd go towards the two countries staying together. Plus I lived in Wales for three years until a year ago; and all the Welsh people I met mentioned many times that they were not for the Welsh Nationalists at all, or thought they were 'nutty' or some such similar term. Sorry, Welsh Nationalists, but it's true.
It wouldn't surprise me if many Scottish people thought the same of the SNP.

Yes, if Scotland becomes independent Labour in England & Wales would have serious difficulties in ever winning another Westminster election. That's the main reason the Scottish pro-Labour papers were so opposed to the SNP in the run-up to the election.
Of course, it's looking unlikely the SNP will be able to hold an independence referendum by 2010 as they don't have a majority and all the other parties in the Scottish Parliament (except the Greens) are pro-Union. I certainly can't imagine the Scottish Tories supporting one.

Despite the fact that the Conservatives have so very few MPs in Scotland, I don't think that they would form an alliance with a party that wanted Scottish Independence. just to get a foot in the door. There is much that I dont't agree with on the Tories current policies but they have always been Unionist through and through. As far as I know, the Scots Nats are up against it because only they want independence so they are finding it difficult to gain allies.

The Cons have flat out said no to independance and also to forming a coalition. As for the second part yes, Labour have relied on Scotland to get them into power for years however the fact would be that if the number of seats goes down then the value of each seat goes up.

Probably yes, and even more so if Wales became independent too. Which just goes to show what a VERY BAD idea independence for Scotland would be for the citizens of the UK.
