I thing that is neat. Its common yet the spelling is different. Ok well its not common Atom, but it sounds the same so kids will never know. By the time hes in 5th grade then that shouldnt be a problem. Worse case he will get made fun of for his name but if not they will just make things up at that age. Dont stress it. Its unique and thats cool.
Its hard to find a unique name thats not so out there, you got my vote I may have to borrow that name myslef.
Goodluck

The kids probably won't notice until 5th grade or so. Don't assume that naming him Atom will get you a scientist, he may end up hating physics if he is given too much hassle for being a nerd. If you go with Atom, make sure the kid can catch, throw, run and karate is a good idea, a sporty geek is better off than a nerd.

Before you name your child anything I think you should put your self into his place and imagine going to school with that name. Anticipate the questions he'll get, the teasing he might face. Then if you still like that name for him go ahead but raise him accordingly so he'll know how to respond when someone calls him something like Atom Bomb or some other nickname. As a parent you owe it to yourself to equip him with the personality tools to handle the name you give him. It would help if you could make the name mean something other than just it being a conversation piece

People might mistake it for Adam, unless they see it written down.

I would think his parents really love science. Mabey his father was a mad scientests. besides, no one will really know the difference by hearing it. they will only know after they see it written.
