Hi,
Some Bible Scholars believe that the tree of knowledge was in fact satan himself. It is said that Satan beguiled Eve into having sex with him, and that is how Cain was fathered. Adam knew Eve and she bore him a son Able. The fact is, it appears that Cain and Able were twins fraternal twins but twins none the less, but not from the same father. Cain's name is not mentioned in the lineage of Adam. You have to question why his name was left out. Anyway,it is now impossible to eat of that tree even if it was a real fruit tree, but I doubt that God would kill his children because they ate some fruit. There is a deeper message here that the mainline churches aren't telling us. That tree along with the Tree of Life was blocked by an Angel with a flaming sword, so no one could get to them...according to Scripture anyway.

The tree is one of two in the midst of the Garden of Eden. The other is the tree of life. These trees represent the two natures of God. The tree of knowledge of good and evil represents God's righteousness the law. the tree of life represents God's mercy and salvation through Jesus Christ.
Man could not live up to the righteousness of God therefore partaking of the tree of knowledge of good and evil or the law brought death to man. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and the wages of sin is death. it is the reason for the tree of life...eat of this tree and you will live forever. God did provide a way for us and this way was the atonement provided by Jesus Christ our lord.

The Lord created man from the dust of the ground and commanded the man not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (this tree represents Satan) which was in the midst of the Garden of Eden. The fruit that this tree produced was lies.
Eve listen to the lies that were told to her by Satan, she believed him and told the lies to Adam. He listened to the voice of his
wife and their disobedience toward God's commandment to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil brought death
upon them as well as upon all mankind.

If I look at it metaphorically, I would take it as the pursuit of knowledge without any reference to the mores and morals that inform us on how to use it. It's longer, and harder, to obtain knowledge in a moral fashion, but it can be done.

In that vein, it would apply to me on many occasions when I've sought knowledge for knowledge's sake. I, thus, have eaten of the fruit in the Garden just as my ancestors did.
