I just had my 12 week old boxer's ears cropped. They put one of those cones around his neck to keep him from scratching his ears. They did not tape the ears or anything else. Should his ears be taped?

I have 2 boxers and I have chosen not to crop their ears. I like the look of them natural and they are now allowed in show with natural ears also. One of our pups from our last litter has his ears done by our vet and they were taped and he wore the ecollar also. They had trouble getting them to stand correctly so they were taped repeatedly for longer than the average time. They now stand perfectly and he looks great. I am a little partial to the natural ears because mine are that way by choice but I think cropping the ears is nice sometimes also. Best of luck.

Going by the cone thing, I'm assuming you did, but I have to ask anyway, not accusing you, or anything, but did you have them done by a vet? What kind of crop was it? I know with battle and other forms of short cropping, they sometimes don't tape them as they're too short, however, ANY time ears are cropped, they NEED to be taped! This prevents them from falling back down and getting infected. It's just like when a human gets a severe cut, it is normally taped. Not taping them, as I said, could cause the ear to fall back down, get infected, etc... They definitely should have been taped!

They should NOT be taped until after the cut edge has healed and the stitches have been removed...after that they will need very vigilant taping and the taping needs to be done correctly.

Yes, if you insist on getting your dogs ears cropped, then they should be taped. Those are OPEN WOUNDS even if stitched and can get infected.

DO NOT do it yourself. Go to the vet.

Why did you cut your puppies ears off? What had it done to you?
