you will have to start at the bottom, but if it's your passion, then learn all you can. You might think to stay away from fast food places, but you can always learn something. Working at a Fast Food place is good at learning efficiency and teamwork. Then, move on to another place...learn what you can about the different operations. Who knows, you may be able to take this knowledge to another job or to your own business eventually.

Set your sights on a better restaurant with a more varied menu then. Learn about the different cooking techniques...etc. Or, check out a specialty bakery. Experience counts a LOT...can you point to anything that would make you an asset to somebody to hire you?

Think about it from a hiring standpoint: Why should a 'good' restaurant hire you? What do you bring to the 'table'? If you have the experience and background, you should be hired quickly. If you can't get your dream job right away, look at what you need to do to eventually get it.

A bakery is a much better choice than a fast food place.
Many coffee houses have someone come in early to do all their fresh baked goods.

Claim Jumpers has good choices. They have several different areas to choose from. My son worked their for a few years.

What I would recommend is calling a restaurants that you would love to work at. Tell them what your plans are and that you would like to talk to an experienced chef. An interview, if you will. Take with you your top 10 questions, pen and paper. Most people would love to talk to you and share their experiences. It is a great way to think ahead on difficulties you may come across and some great advice from someone who has been there.

P.S. I agree with what Kurt said also.

Just start applying to jobs at restaurants, pastry shops and bakeries. I'm guessing someone will take a chance on you, especially since you are going to school for this. How about doing any internship/apprenticeship? I would talk to someone at your school, I'm sure businesses call them all the time looking for good quality help.

You can start working at a restaurant in pastries and move you way up to the cookline then move to a chef. It's easy to get on to Pappadeaux's Kitchen or anyway and start working you way up with experience. You have to work you way up, and since you are going to school for it you will get paid more.

See if the school offers any kind of internship or work study program. That will get you some professional experience supervised by the school. So that you can count it as education and work experience on a resume.

Any restuarant owner/manager would love to hire a kid (ambitious young person) in culinary school for their restaurant.
Go in to lots of restaurants, dressed nice with a nice resume.
Talk to the manager/owner. You'll get something.

Find a chef owned restaurant and see if they would offer you an internship, or check out corporate restaurant websites and see if they have any apprenticeship programs.
