It takes an average person to walk 2,000 steps to equal a mile. But it is recommended that we all walk 10,000 steps a day. That's equals 5 miles. If you were to walk 10,000 steps a day, you are most likely going to lose weight.

that would depend entirely on the length of your stride. What might take a tall man with long legs say 1,000 steps to walk a mile, it might take a dwarf 3,000 steps to walk the same mile. you don't measure it in steps until you know the length of your walking stride, then you divide that length into the length of a mile to estimate how many steps you have to take.
Or you wear the pedometer, walk a known mile, like a track, and see what the pedometer says.

Do you have the directions on the counter? When I got one I had to measure my stride length by walkin 10 steps, then measuring from where i started to where I ended then divide the number of inches by steps, and then I logged it into the counter, and it knows if i go so many steps thats how far I walked. I have short legs so my stride isn't very long, if you are tall yours will be longer, so the number of steps depends.

The average person's stride length is approximately 2.5 feet long. That means it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk one mile. one mile equals 5,280 linear feet. You can measure your own stirde and claculate it from there.
