any weight lost on only 900 calories a day will be mostly water and muscle. if you consume less calories than the BMR requires the metabolic rate will slow to a crawl.

That depends on where you are getting your 900 calories from. The best way to lose weight fast is to diet right and exercise at least 30 minutes a day. A good diet is one you can eat the rest of your life. Instead of just hardly eating anything all day, eat lots (i.e. 5 or so) of small meals a day. This keeps your metabolism up so that when you want to cheat a little, your body can handle it : ) An apple, fat free yogurt, and lean meat are all good places to get calories from. If you eat 900 calories of junk food, it won't help. Good luck!

Yes, you can, but it's NOT a good idea. It sounds like a fast solution, but there are reasons that no professional will recommend doing it.
First, that is starvation level. Your body will immediately cut down on your energy expendature, and also store any calories it gets. It will also start burning your muscles, as muscle fiber is easier for your body to digest than fat is. The more muscle you lose, the lower your body's resting calorie burn will be.
Ideally, you should exercise a lot, and try to drop your calorie intake to about 500 less than your burn, to lose weight slowly and safely--you can maintain or build muscle mass, AND lose fat. It's not easy, but it's doable.
Short term solutions like crash diets can cause health problems (sometimes very serious ones like imbalances in your body that can be fatal or debilitating). It eats away muscle mass, and makes you burn fewer calories. It makes your body fight you to lose weight.
Work WITH your body, not against it. You'll be healthier in the long run.
