I was told it can be done by anyone if you practice it. I do not find scripture to support this. All I find says it has to be interpreted.

In Acts. the Apostles were speaking foreign languages in one perfect language. Everyone understood what they were saying even when there were many nationalities hearing the words.

There is no interpretation for speaking in tongues that isn't easily understood by everyone hearing it. God's language is understood by all regardless of their beliefs or lack of spirit.

I have actually been in a Pentecostal church and what they do is make a bunch of weird noises and say God is speaking through them. It is confusion and Satan is the author of confusion.

I Cor. 14:2 speaks of a prayer language. It is between you and God but there are also tongues for a public assembly that should have an interpretation..There is a subsequent experience in God that all Christian churches do not believe in, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. With this comes the infilling power of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the spirit, one of them being tongues..Some believe this as described in the book of Acts and I Corinthians as well as Mark 16 passed away with the apostles..As well as I Cor. 13:8-10 meaning that the perfect, Jesus, has come..I think Paul means once Christ second return for the church has taken place, which it hasn't.
..and I also don't think the Acts of the Apostles has ceased...if it has..then how can we count on John 3:16 not being ceased?

I say ask God to show you what is correct and reveal the truth without wearing "denominational" glasses. as Paul said in I Cor. 12:1..I would not have you ignorant.. I tried to list scripures so that you can form your own opinion.
Edit: the reason it is considered "secret" when using a prayer language, is because the enemy doesn't know what you are praying..which is why the devil comes against this gift so hard and uses believers to do it..

Speaking in tongues is a gift from God. When you go to a church and they speak it every Sunday it is not true. It is something they have practiced.

TRUE STORY
My friend attended a church and every Sunday the pastors wife would catch the spirit and speak in tongues. One Sunday she was in church when as usual the pastors wife jumped up and started dancing around the church and speaking in tongues. There was a young couple sitting next to my cousin that would not stop laughing. They were told many times and they finally stood up and let the whole congregation know that the pastors wife was saying "look at me, look at me" in their language. The couple never returned to that church neither did my cousin and a few other members. Speaking in tongues is real but there are fakes out there.

Speaking in tongues is a Spiritual gift... it 'cannot be done' by just anyone and it is something that is for God and not something to 'benefit' ourselves. Speaking in tongues is a way that God can speak thru us or for the Holy Spirit to speak to God from within us in prayer and worship. It is not to be done in public unless you have found someone that can interpret.

if someone starts blurting out without an interpretor, it is for their own glory ... because the Lord is very clear on how tongues is to be used. God WILL provide an interpretor if indeed He has something to say to people.

there are churches that say people who cannot speak in tongues have hidden sin in their lives.... that is so wrong... no where in the bible does it say that all people will receive all gifts or that we can 'practice' and 'get a gift of the spirit'

it is very real and true, it is not 'old' giftings as I once thought it was.... for God humbled my doubting heart when he poured out His Spirit on me one night a few years ago. I did not want this gift, but I truly know that it is now real... and God can and will do things that people doubt to reveal Himself to them

never have I used tongues in public, not even when in prayer with my husband or family for it isnt about 'having' the gift, but using it when God brings it forth, not 'of myself'

satan can mimic tongues in people so easily and does.... so beware of those 'speaking' with no interpretation

Speaking in tongues is extremely rare today. There is no such thing as a "prayer language". If you hear about either-its phony.
I have been a born again Christian for 18 years. I have seen and heard literally thousands who claim both tongues and a prayer language. In every case so far-it has all been a fake. Most of it is intentional fraud. Some has been just very ignorant people trying to please other ignorant people.
There may be a place for Biblical tongues again near the end, like we saw in Acts, but what you see and hear today in the Pentecostal/Charismatic church is a fraud.

It is from the Holy Spirit, if you do it on your own, its not real. The bible gives us an example in the upper room where Jesus told people to pray and wait after the Crucifixion.

i don't believe that just anyone has that ability either. i think alot of people, not to be mean, do it for attention. everyone has different gifts and speaking in tongues is one of them. practice doesn't make perfect.

Before I answer, thanks. "Tongues" as referenced in the bible simply refers to "language" but with so many being full of imagination, all of a sudden these verses "have to" mean we can communicate with God in "secret" OPENLY around others. They can't understand but God does, which is a FALLACY. Read Chapter 2 of Acts to clarify what I have just said. GOD is the one who can speak in tongues to every person according to his or her LANGUAGE. People can do the same. As with many things in faith the confusion does not lay in "God" but how people PERCEIVE "truth."

I stay away from this as a Christian as it can be downright demonic in nature.

My belief is that tongues are not for today.

God is not the Author of confusion....and tongues cause confusion.

None of it is real other than the power over it gives the church leaders.
