For instance, look at the question about the atheists worst nightmare. Obviously, this is in reference to something. Just because YOU don't know what it is referencing doesn't mean the question is stupid (or "dupid," as one person deemed it). Why can people not just think "Oh. This is a question I do not understand, so I will not answer it"?

Saint, I put it in R&S because it directly relates to people in R&S. I don't know what people in other sections do because this is the only one I frequent. The other sections wouldn't be able to answer the question, then, would they?

Candace, isn't that a bit like saying that questions about the gender dynamics with the Left Behind Series is only for people in that "little group" and that anyone who has never heard of that series could come in and say something highly intellectual like "duh. i don no wut yer talkin about, but yer jez stoopid" and it would be fine?

To answer your more immediate question, the reason as I understand it is that they do not understand a subject or matter and so wish to quickly brush it aside. The quickest way to do this is to belittle it. Now if they took the time to understand the question that would mean they have been inconvenienced and in such a fast paced society that is unacceptable. That is why if I do not understand a subject I often times research it before answering.
Later day.

Very good question and suggestion. Some people just feel the need to write something down even if they are unsure on what a correct answer would be. I agree that not understanding a question does not make the question stupid. Good luck in finding the answer you are looking for to this question.

Questions should be posted for everyone to answer. People who are not in your loop would view this as a stupid question. I assume it is in reference to Kirk Cameron and the whole banana thing. If he wanted to know if you buy your bananas yellow or green, he could have asked it that way. Regardless, people will still answer for the 2 points.
EDIT
Touche' Hombre!! Only just a "bit." :)

Because it's easier for someone to degrade others than actually take the time to try to understand.
