I have done the same thing for my college classes. Get a trash can and a box of tissues. You will need both, the stories are endless and brutal.

Here is some information that will help you that I added to my paper.

Facts and myths about child abuse

Myth: Child abuse occurs in only poverty stricken area

Fact: Child abuse occurs in any home. Children who are abused are often times abused by parents or relatives who were abused themselves. The class of income has nothing to do with whether or not a parent is going to abuse their child or children. Child abuse is a learned behavior.

Myth: Child abuse is induced by drug or alcohol abuse

Fact: That is not true. Out of 83% of the adults that were interviewed that have a record of domestic violence 79% of them said that they would strike whether they were sober, drunk or high. As a matter of fact out of that 79% 13% admitted that the drugs or alcohol tended to mellow them out a bit.

Other information that can help

Signs to look for:

A child who appears to be wearing dirty clothing
A child who constantly appears to be unhealthy
A child who is always wearing long sleeve shirts or pants regardless of the conditions of weather
A child who appears to be withdrawn or depressed
A child who was once doing well in school and their grades began to drop
A child who appears to be afraid to go home or who makes excuses to stay around after school
A child who appears to be malnourished
A child with poor hygiene
A child with a violent temper or one who strikes at anytime for no reason at all
Persistent nightmares

I wish you the best of luck with your report. ;0) I hope this helped
