It is not Likely that the baby will be born with brain damage and can't believe someone said that. It COULD happen but it is not real likely. Many babies are born addicted to narcotics. Most times the babies are put on methadone and are then weaned off from it. My primary care physician happens to be an addiction medicine specialist and I have had the opportunity to speak with many of these mothers who had babies born addicted while waiting at the office. I know one woman whom had twins born this way and they are due to be all done with their methadone detox real soon. The mothers are watched very closely and tested often to make sure they are no longer using once detoxed to insure the babies are being raised in a drug free environment. They either stick with the program or they lose their babies. I recently attended the birth of my third grandchild and was surprised to see that when they opened up the newborn pack, you know the little pack of this and that which they use when the baby is first born, contained not only the usual like drops for eyes, but also naltrexone. They did not give it to my daughters baby but they were not suspicious of drug usuage.Naltrexone is used as a remedy for an overdose as it unbinds the drug from the receptor instantly reversing the drug effects thus hopefully saving the patient. I asked the nurse about it and she said they give it when opiate use is suspected to see if the baby will go into withdrawal. And yes if the mother were to detox while pregnant the baby would also go through withdrawal. If the mother then stayed drug free the baby would also be born drug free. The severe symptoms of withdrawal last 3-6 days but it takes a lot longer to be back to yourself and even months before returning to normal sleeping patterns.

it would depend on how long the mother had been using the percocets before the pregnancy. But it takes 30 days for an adult to detox from them, so I would imagine it would take at least that long for a fetus to do so. So yes, the baby would detox along with the mom, and likely be born brain damaged to boot.
