acid reflux is diagnosed primarily through a description of symptoms the client is giving the doctor. As for what kind of doctor deals with digestive tract issues, that would be a gastroenterologist. Among some testing that can be done, tho they by no means are required, would be, endoscopy, barium swallow, CT and Mri.

I think you are referring to GER, gastroesophageal reflux, a condition where the acid contents of the stomach flow up the esophagus to cause chest pain and irritation. The lining of the esophagus is not designed to resist acid secretions, so irritation and pain develop.

Any family physician, internist or pediatrician can treat this condition. Cases that do not respond to standard treatment are usually referred to a GI specialist, a gastro-enterologist.

As with so many medical conditions, most cases of reflux are minor annoyances, but there are some that lead to much more serious consequences. So see a doctor if symptoms persist.
