Me and my boyfriend have been planning a trip to Canada for months and months, we leave on Friday, and I just stumbled upon a piece of information that says that Canada will not let you in with a DUI, My Boyfriend got one (To much embarrassment to us) a while ago (2 years). Is this really an issue? Someone told me they will just give us a harder time about it, but it should be fine... any insight?

Any criminal history (misdemeanor or felony) can lead to customs and immigration refusing you entry.

In particular, histories of DUI and DWI are among those that draw the most refusals (probably because the number of murders crossing the border is far fewer, so it's a matter of proportion).

There is a time limit on how long they can use your past history - it happens to be up to 10 years from date of charge (which is NOT date of conviction). If you have multiple counts, your 'clean' window begins after the LAST charge was made.

It does not mean that they WILL refuse you entry, but it does mean they have the RIGHT to do so.

Yes, it really is an issue.
Since it is only two years ago, the chances of his being denied entry because of it are very strong.
You might be able to get over the border okay, esp. if you are driving (rather than him), if they don't look up his information or ask (never lie to customs!).

If you appear nervous or uncertain about your answers, you will be drilled further, and possibly required to go inside for closer scrutiny, so be prepared with your answers of where you are going, why, for how long, where you are staying, and when you are returning.

If they discover it either by looking up his information or asking, chances are you will have to vacation in the U.S. At this point, I think I would take my chances ... but have alternate plans just in case.

(And PLEASE do not drink and drive ... it sounds like you have both learned from this, blessings!)

Yes this is true, you may try bout without that passport you are not allowed to enter. You may apply for a pardon after 7 years of that DUI!

I really feels it's who you have working that day, on each side. I have encountered some real nice boarder guards, then some real a-ssholes. Trust me on this one.
You may enter not one problem back going back in could be a tuff call or vice averse.
