Yes reading NY times is an excellent way in increasing general knowledge. I sign up for free newsletters to be delivered to my inbox. I send it to a special folder. You are more informed on everything from world affairs to entertainment. Reading widely is also good. Whether it be books, watching educational programs on TV, or browsing the internet. However when you browse the internet there are a lot of opinions that may not be concrete facts so be careful what sources you get your information from. Making a mental note of who says what and where they get their information is a useful habit to maintain when gathering information from the net.

Knowledge is a very wide word. First, identify your areas of interest and then read voraciously on those topics wherever you find those articles - in newspapers, magazines, books & novels, internet etc. divide your time into all these and donot depend only on internet. Next step is to find from where you'll get the above, i.e. papers, mags, books & novels and how much you'd like to spend on each area. It does cost to acquire knowledge and you have to economize that. If you are acquiring knowledge of a field to take up as a vocation you'll have to spend more in specialized books. But a word of caution. Go slow on acquiring general knowledge of each & everything on this world. You'll use up your neurons faster. This is my personal experience. Information overload is of no use. Take my word!

Even something that sounds boring like looking through the encyclopedia may prove enriching for people who care about knowledge.
Something I regret not doing when my siblings' children were younger is just flipping through the encyclopedias with them so they could look at the pictures. It may sound like I'm being overly regretful, but one of the most commonly mentioned experiments in introductory psychology books is one in which analyses of the brains of mice showed that mice that lived in enriched environments with many different objects and activities had higher levels (and perhaps more kinds) of neurotransmitters than those of mice that lived in environments with few objects and few activities.
I'll try to post more about that experiment later if I can find the information.

Dear Tazeen
Knowledge is vast ,but to be somebody in this world what i have learned is you have to be an expert in some thing.first select a topic in which you want to be an expert and go on searching new items on the subject and then a time will come when you can call yourself an expert and then spend the rest of your time spreading what you learnt.
