I ask because there are times nurses and others have trouble taking mine. Some say I have "small veins" but others have said that too many medical technicians are just poorly trained. What do you think? Thanks.

Both answers are right. Some have veins that are weak-walled, thus they collapse and "blow" more easily, others have what we in the profession call "garden hoses" that you can hit from across the room with your eyes closed.

If you know you're going to have blood drawn or have an IV started, make sure you're plenty hydrated. This makes your veins more full and easier to hit. Also, placing a warm pack on your hands/arms can help dilate your veins so they're more prominent.

Good luck!

For the Most part I Have No Problem, Sometimes people Have Poor Veins and I Try the Foot, I Remember Trying to Insert a Cath. On a person With Dehydration, to Administer Fluids, I had to Give Up, I Think the Fluids Were Administered Via a Central Line, Subsequently Inserted, but Not By me.

Mostly everyone is different when it comes to their veins. Some are easy to see and feel and others are deep and tiny. I normally don't have a problem getting blood or starting an IV. But experience does help no matter, and there are just days even the most experienced can't hit a water hose. (ems term) If yours are small and deep, then I can see where there might be a problem getting blood. I've seen the newest techs get blood like they've done it for years, and I've seen older ones act like it's their first stick.

I just became IV certified and it is just dependant on the person. My veins sit right next to my skin so finding them is no problem. Sometimes veins are just tough to hit.

Some people have easier veins than others.

Some phlebotomists (using the term for anyone who draws blood) are more skilled than others.
