Something practical...

He will likely see combat soon.

Laptops are a good tool for the endless reports, statements, requests, spreadsheets, matrices, oporders, warno's, etc., that your young lieutenant will create, edit, review, or read. Get a good wireless card along with it.

Get a good panasonic toughbook, with some long lasting batteries. A good digital camera (3 to 5 mega pixels) with memory cartridge. A 2 gigabyte or greater memory stick.

Or, some magazines for his M4 that are made by H&K (the issue mags are made by the lowest bidder, and sometimes are the reason for stoppages or malfunctions in the weapon, a stoppage or malfunction in a gunfight is a very bad thing, and reduces your chances of survivability) the H&K mags are made entirely from high quality steel, some are coated with teflon inside, they use very good craftsmanship, and eliminate the chance of stoppage or malfunction due to a poor magazine, thereby reducing the likelihood that your son's weapon won't fire when he needs it to.

Some good shooting gloves - lotsa guys like the Oakley brand. Some nomex long underwear, this will help prevent flash burns should he be involved in an IED attack while riding inside an armored vehicle, essentially it will keep his clothes from burning to his skin, saving him from getting endless skin grafts later on down the road.

Some Peltor or Sordin hearing protection - you can get these so that he can hook it up to his commo gear, it will amplify voices so that he can hear normal sounds around him, and provide clear sound for commo (helping his situational awareness), but it will prevent loud noise, and save his ear drums from bursting if he's involved in an IED attack. Check with TCI Swat or similar companies.

Well if you could get on to base they sell great gifts at AAFES. You could get him a box to put his medals in or something like that. Since you are his parents you might not be able to so you could buy a shadow box which is the same thing. http://usmilitarystuff.com/ has some things that you could check out!
