it is if you are training heavy..it will give your muscles time to recoup...but, if you are training light and trying to tone..everyday is fine as well as you are not working the same body parts daily....you need to allow the muscle to recoup itself in order to not damage the muscle fibers..

It really depends on the exercise. If you're lifting weights, especially if the workout is intense, it's best to give yourself some time between workouts. You should also give at least three days between muscle groups as well. With cardio, you can get away with exercising every day, as long as you can do it. However, the best results of any routine comes from having a little recovery time, maybe a couple of days off a week, or from varying routines, and even cross training.

Yes it is very true.
Your body needs time to rest and repair. If it doesn't you will see no benefits to exercise other than calories burnt. However, the added stress will cause many unpleasant effects. Illness, pain, fatigue to name the major problems.
I always tell people, you have a work day and a growth day.
When you exercise you create micro tears in your muscle, it needs time to heal up. That is how you see improvement.
Now, if you really want, you can work out a split program. However, even at that, you should have at least 2 rest days a week.
If you are doing high intensity weight training, only train 3 days a week. If you have a proper split program or a low to medium intensity cardio program you can go 5 days a week.

I think it depends on the exercise. With weight training or some other strenuous workout, you should def rest between days. In order to keep a healthy heart, we should do some form of aerobic workout for at least 30 minutes a day. You can take a walk everyday and be just fine. I used to walk everyday and I felt so much better. If you feel too tired or if you get sore, you should take breaks even with light workouts as well.

You should allow for 48 hours rest for a muscle group following a workout, and don't work a muscle group if it is still sore from a previous workout. So you can workout everyday just don't work the same group(s) on back to back days. Cardio can however be done most days of the week.

the intensity of exercise pretty much dictates the frequency of training. if training at a low level of intensity (<60% of the 1RM) then a body part can be exercised more frequently with a shorter rest interval.
in terms of resistance training you really don't want to exercise with weights more than 2-3 days in a row if you are training at a high level of intensity which would be using loads close to 80% of your 1RM
