My female has been in heat for over a week now, does anyone know if this is common and how long the normal cycle is?

The Magic Number Is 21
A female dog has a heat cycle of 21 days.
7 days coming in 7 In Cycle and 7 Going out of cycle. So 3X7=21

Remember though all female dogs are different when it comes to this kind of thing. At one time i raised beagles and they were bred on the 2nd day of the second week and then again on the 5th day.

Good luck. jim

Estrus (heat) lasts for about 3 weeks. Returns every 6 months or so. from the time she's about 6-8 months old until she's very old - like over 12.

You can buy "period panties" for your dog - they look ridiculous but they do help keep her from spotting all over the house. You can also get a "deodorant" that helps deter unwanted suitors - but not all that well.

She will have to be penned or kept in the house - certainly on a leash when outside to deter unwanted matings.

In a couple of weeks, she'll go out of estrus. At that time, GET HER SPAYED. Too many puppies out there now.

3 weeks.
Get her spayed and you never have to put up with the mess again.
