I've never been popular, why start now?

It depends on what I am standing up for the friend for. If the friend is wrong then no I would not stand up for them. If the friend is right then whether it was the POPULAR thing to do or not then I would stand up for them.

I have been through this many times. If I agree with someone and they are being taunted or teased for what they think I will and have stood up for them. I have even stood up for people who didn't like me. The popular thing to do, most of the time is actually one of the dumbest things to do. People are too wrapped up in themselves to really know and understand what is going on in reality.

Yes... but I would do so knowing full well WHY that was the unpopular thing to do... perhaps the most educated approach will allow the popularity situation to change.

You should always stand up for what you know is right even though it's unpopular. You need to decide whose opinion counts more, God or the masses.

If the friend was out numbered and wrongly accused, I would stand firmly by their side. But, it is there battle to fight and my job to support and aid only if needed

It depends on if the friend was right.

I mean, if the friend stole and got busted, I would still love my friend, but I wouldn't try to make excused for him / her. But if my friend was getting teased for wearing funny shoes or something, yeah, I'd tell people to stop being mean.

Definitely. I would and I have. Sure it stings some, but not nearly as bad as letting something go that shouldn't. Or leaving un-truths as fodder for the masses.
