You have a good question there. I used to be a perfectionist and after years of trying to be perfect. I was taught that perfection can really hurt a person. I learned to stop most of it, by learning to be myself . I also started liking myself and others. I learned that being positive about oneself is very helpful. Don't dwell on your bad qualities always focus on the good. Now, I am a happier in knowing I do the best I can and don't worry about if I fail. Everybody fails at some time or other.

It is not necessarily bad to be a perfectionist who likes to see things done right. When it becomes a ritual or obsession it may be an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which see by typing it into Yahoo! search.

Do you want to curb this behavior in yourself or in another? It is possible to get over an compulsive behavior by proper cognitive or behavioral therapy with, possibly, medication. To curb it in another is almost impossible I have found. "Anything worth doing is worth doing right" is the maxim of the individual who is a perfectionist while "perfectionists are never happy" is the complaint of one trying to please a perfectionist.

You might try just acknowledging or pointing out that perfection is something that can only be approached, never achieved absolutely and change your behavior to a more easy going anxiety free style.

I hope this helps, good luck, good health, peace and love!

No one is perfect. Even the Amish who make beautiful article and could very easily make them perfect, purposely leave a small flaw in them because, to them, only God is perfect. Learn to accept that you are human and humans are allowed to be imperfect. To err is human, to forgive is divine.
