A pony is a small male horse. Not a young horse that has yet to grow up, but a grown-up horse that just happens to be small by breed or just because it is small.

I could be wrong, but I do believe a pony is a horse that is less than 13 hands high when fully grown.

By itself, it's a breed of smaller horses. But the word is also used in describing smaller version of an object or a small measure of liquor.
e.g. pony keg of beer is roughly half the size of a full keg.
