My cat has 3 kittens that are 4 weeks old. Before having them she always did her no 2's outside. But now, even though she goes outside she always does her no 2's in the litter box and makes a right mess with it, IT IS FOUL! The smell makes me heave and it lingers all through the flat, Im changing her litter box 3 times a day spending a fortune on airfreshner, shake 'n' vac and plug ins! It is embarrasing when people come round because all you can smell is cat sh*t! Other than that she is spotlessly clean.

Anyone else had this problem and what did you do about it?

My cat used to go outside but since we have moved he has started going in his tray and the smell is just disgusting! I am always spraying airfreshener too!! We since found out that he didn't have his 'patch' marked out because we were new to the area, so didn't want to go outside as he was nervous and wasn't comfortable with his surroundings, now he is getting used to them he has started to go back outside for his number twos! Maybe your cat doesn't want to leave her kittend for any amount of time, or maybe as she has recently given birth she is not the fittest so couldn't defend herself from anything outside? Cats are always on guard for any possible danger, if they don't think they can get away or defend they are likely to stay away. Giver her time and I'm sure she will go back outside and save you from a smelly house!

this behavior will pass. I use tidy cat small spaces cat liter box and my litter box is in a very small hallway that everyone has to pass on the way out of their rooms or to the bathroom. the only time anyone ever B*tch*s about the odor is when i get extreamly behind. other then that the smell is bad because she is also eating all of the waste from the tiny kittens. good luck

Are the feces normal or are they loose? If your cat has any sort of diahhrea, then she may be sick, and should go to the vet. Have you given her any different food, or have you begun to give her milk, since she was pregnant or had her babies. If you have changed anything, then the food change or adding milk could cause diahhrea. If her stool is loose she really should see the vet. She could also have worms, and if she does, then the kittens could also have them or get them. A vet would be the very best one to advise if the problem continues for the sake and safety of the mother and also for the babies. Also, please do check them all for fleas. Fleas do not cause stinky stools, but can be bad for young kittens. If they have fleas, they need to be bathed in water with dish soap in it which will kill the fleas. Probably should not do this until they are a week or two old, or consult with the vet for best age. (Fleas can kill kittens, and so can flea powder and other flea remedies).

Try changing the cat litter, some brands keep in the smell better than others. Also air-freshners rarely do the trick, but you can get special sprays and powders to mix with the litter that will eliminate almost all smell. I use them myself and have had people remark on my odour-free home, even when I had three indoor cats.

She could just be wanting to stay near her kittens, and taking time to poo outside is just too much for her. Kittens change her life a lot, when they get older, she will go back to her normal self, whatever the problem. Just be patient, and try not to have many people over. You could try putting her litter box in the garage, or somewhere out of smell reach. Just make sure she can get to it by herself.

I had the same problem I put the cat box by a window and put a box fan in the window so the air is pulled out side it works pretty good the fan is only 10.00 at wally world.and she will have the uglys for awhile till her babys are done nursing her body is making all sorts of goodie for them kittens and this will make her have the s--ts.give her dry food for awhile and back off on the cans and do not give her any milk this will make it more horable.

Trust me! Ive got 8 cats and had kittens galore in my house (9 kittens at one point) and the mothers have also shown this behaviour.
It will pass though and your cat will start going outside again, especially when all the kittens have been found homes.
You have just gotta ride this out and accept that letting your cat have kittens does create extra work!

She doesn't want to leave her little ones for longer than necessary, and think about it she is showing her babies what to do once they are litter tray trained and fully weaned off you will soon see her going outside to do all her jobs and staying out for quite a while just to get peace away from them. They will train up to the litter tray without any help from you mum is showing them and they will go where she goes. Don't worry another couple of weeks and you can re-home them and mum will soo go out again, but be careful she will come into season soon so as soon as her milk has dried up i would advise you to get her neutered.
