If you responded by throwing a chair, or putting a hole in the wall with your fist, they would probably feel you were proving their point. The best thing to do would be to focus on your own unique qualities that make small-minded people think you are crazy, and play them up in a positive way. And try to become acquainted with other so-called nut-cases. Remember that there's different kinds of crazy-- like "Let's paint the kitchen bright red" crazy is a little more accessible than "Let's draw pictures of decapitated goats and attach them to the church bulletin board" crazy. No one wants to be around a creep. You should buy yourself a Ramones album to cheer yourself up!

I have been called a nut case. On more than one occasion. I didn't care and just shrugged it off. Basically, I wasn't doing what the person wanted/expected of me. Tough luck.

I am a schizophrenic (paranoia) who has been called that many times and worse. I react to it with patience and understanding because even many in the medical profession have a reserved opinion about us. No one really knows what causes the disorder so it is understandable that the public comes up with wild imaginary ideas about the condition. I try to educate others about the disorder as far as my knowledge goes.

Well I personally would get defensive because schizophrenia runs in my family. And to me they are nut cases and I wouldn't want to be compared to them!
