The Bush administration unconstitutionally and illegally attacked Iraq for three really lame reasons:
1) The Bush family had a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein ever since the days of Desert Storm, when George H.W. Bush was ridiculed, criticized and humiliated for 'not finishing the job' and ousting Hussein at that time;
2) Dick Cheney and all his Exxon-Mobil buddies want all that OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands so they can get richer and richer and richer feeding America's addiction to cheap, easily-accessible foreign OIL;
3) Ever since World War II, the giant U.S. military-industrial complex recognized how profitable 'war' could be. So they bought up all the politicians, hired pricey lobbyists, and formed special interest groups to promote and encourage more 'war'. This, the U.S. was embroiled in the Korean Conflict; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the Cold War; Vietnam and Desert Storm (just to mention a few). It was time for a new 'war' so companies such as McDonnell-Douglass, the Carlyle Group, Lockheed-Martin, Sikorsky, and Halliburton could boost their sagging profits.
For anyone to believe we're in Iraq to "bring democracy" to that undemocratic nation is the epitome of naivete.
We're there for OIL and WAR PROFITEERING.
That's all. If that's not true, WHY are we building the largest U.S. embassy in the world on a 104-acre site in downtown Baghdad overlooking the 'new' Iraqi puppet government installed by the Bush administration??
Is anyone truly ignorant enough to believe that it's just a 'coincidence' that two former oilmen occupy the top two slots in the Oval Office today??
We will maintain a dominate presence in Iraq until we have sucked every drop of OIL from its sands. That will ensure PROFITS for the 'war' industry and the oil companies for decades to come. -RKO- 05/09/07

Well, to get the approval from Congress Bush told everyone that they owned Weapons of Mass Destruction, and kept slipping in the words 9/11 and terrorism. Once we got there and realized that there were no WMD's (which was kind of controversial after the whole Valerie Plame scandel because it appears as if our government may have know there were no WMD's all along), we decided to stay and 'liberate' the iraqi people. Unfortunately for us Saddam (although evil) was keeping his country under control, now we are in the middle of a huge civil war. So I believe are new purpose over there is to lets see how did GW put it...
"Slowly but surely the truth will be known. Either we'll succeed (smirky Laugh / Chuckle), Or we won't succeed. But the definition of success, (as I describe it) is sectarian violence going down. Success is not no violence." GWB 5/2/07
Oh--how the definition of success has changed over there. He has already succeeded in lining the pockets of his powerful friends, that is are true reason for being there, money, and oil.

The core of the objective is to give the Iraqi people the freedom to direct their own lives, to establish a democratic republic . . . as best modeled after our own form of government, instead of the brutal regional warlords of the past.
And while it is also true that the US would surely like for them to be an ally, for many reasons, one of which is the oil production, but more than that, it establishes a form of a "democracy" in the Middle East, which has a VERY strong destabilizing effect on the fascist neighbors. (See the nation of Israel.)
There are geo-political implications that go way beyond the oil, and focus more on political allies . . . stable friends in a part of the world that has been unstable for several centuries. Think of the implications if Iraq were to become a friendly nation to the US, self-directed, self-sustaining, wealthy nation through a political process that they (Iraqis themselves) control and are not controlled by the US, or local regional tyrants and religious fanaticism??!?
We call it Freedom. It's what we gave to Germany after WW2, and Japan, and Italy. It doesn't mean we always succeed at their grasping and embracing of free market systems and democracies, but we have an obligation to give them that opportunity when the circumstances permit. Most of Europe has reverted to their Socialist ways, . . . but Japan is a good friend and ally to the US, and have their own form of self-directed government. Were they worth any less than Afghanis or Iraqi's? I think not.
One additional note, Islamic fascism has chosen this moment in time to spread and destroy all the world that doesn't believe their way. If you doubt their intents, . . . look at the fear now present in Europe: Spain (bombings of train lines until the gov't changed), France (the 900+ burned vehicles from two Muslim boys who were caught breaking the law), Denmark (where the gov't is run by Islamist, and the native Dane's have been leaving in droves, where they are no longer the majority of their own society), Britain (where the threats by Islamists have been shaping the election of their government officials). All of Socialist Europe have placated, and cowered under the Islamic threat to increase violence if they don't get their way. Who will stand-up to these bully's? Who has the backbone to stand-up for what is right? It most definitely isn't Europeans . . . or US Democrats, for that matter. Especially when they call the war effort lost before it's lost . . . and when they are called on the mat for their views, they backdown and backtrack on what they said (Note Senate Majority Ldr Harry Ried!)
Why are we there . . . . to provide peace and stability to the region, and if possible, to give freedom to those who seek it, and allow them the opportunities afforded you and I, ... to speak your mind, and to shape the government you live under! They too desire that right. Look at all the Policemen that are blown-up waiting for their opportunity to serve their city/ nation, and more stand in-line to be recruited the next day? They want the opportunities we have in this nation, including the right to have a free market, a safe home, friendly allies to do business with, and the right to shape their own government and it's leaders!
Oh, . . . and while I think of it, . . . IF it was just for oil, we would have already grabbed all we could and have fire-bombed the entire nation . . . and as I hear it, . . . we're TOO concerned to incur "collateral damage" that the iraqi's scoff each time a jet flies-over, because they know that we won't toast even an innocent bug, . . . because its innocent, and that would be collateral damage despite the fact that 100 insurgents could be holed-up in the same building.
Methinks that if the issue were just for oil, . . . this would war would already be over, and we would have already issued contracts to Halliburton to rebuild the entire infrastructure, and by now, . . . the oil would be flowing freey into the US coiffers at a greatly decreased price at the pumps!!! Whoops . . . guess it isn't just about oil!!

You ask one question but you will get many different answers. As far as Iraq goes we are there because of lies. ( Bush lies ) Bush said we must fight in Iraq to make the USA safe "BUT" Iraq did not do 9-11 and the Iraq Government did not and does not have WMD. The USA will fail in Iraq just like Vietnam.Shame on the war supporters.
