So many people choose to return hatred for hatred and insult for insult. What good does that do? Yes, for a moment it might feel cathartic, even good, but in the end it ill always harm you most.

I do my best to follow the Golden Rule, even with difficult people.

i did before respond to hatred with peace before and i still do it. on time i was just trying to cross the street to go to my home and someone drove by and stouted Hezbolla at me. i am not sure why but my first reaction was to flip him off...then i thought about it. i figured flipping him off would only confirm that he is right about me. i think he thought he was calling me some type of terrorist. so in stead i put down my hand as fast as i put it up and just said Al hamdullia which means Praise God in Arabic. and i felt like that i was a better person for it.

i never actually gave the "golden rule" much thought. i treat people with kindness and good just because it is the righteous thing to do...i don't like being ugly to people especially with the concept that Muslims are all evil spirited...and that isn't truth. we are not all evil spirited. so i try to show the people the good side to Islam. so far, no one who knows me has a problem with me. i know people from almost every belief.

I've never seen any benefit in "an eye for an eye" - it's what they call a "zero-sum game" - one where, in the end, gains and losses cancel each other out and nobody wins.

Or else it grows in a back-and-forth game where progressively the price gets higher.

Alternately, 'walking a higher path' seems to me the nobler response. Anger is an energy, and it's a wasteful one. When met with hatred, I think it's best just to carry on as if nothing happened.

Think somebody at one time said something about 'turning the other cheek'. Perhaps we'd do well to listen to him...

Yes, I try to! I agree with what you said 100%

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned”
- Siddhartha Gautama -

“Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love, this is the eternal rule”
- Siddhartha Gautama -

“Overcome the angry by non-anger; overcome the wicked by goodness; overcome the miser by generosity; overcome the liar by truth”

I try hard to remain patient and tolerant even my beliefs are under attack. It's very difficult, but I do try to follow the Golden Rule. I wish more people here would. There really is no reason to be insulting, hateful and downright mean.

We may be able to do this in some instances today, but this is where Martin Luther's (and Augustine) looked for "uses of the Law". Because laws like "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength" are IMPOSSIBLE to keep. I've heard "Christians" post this here and that leads me to believe they are not even Christians. God put these laws into effect so that we would find an ALIEN righteousness in Jesus Christ. This is a great charge you have given us by reminding us of the great love of Christ, thanks. But, we also must remember that we cling to Christ for ALL (if any :D) goodness in us.

Debra, it is important to remember that the Golden Rule works both ways: others treat us the way -they- want to be treated.

The question is: should we?

For me, it depends upon whether they way they want to be treated is consistent with my code of conduct. It also depends upon whether I want them to be treated in a way that is better than they want for themselves.

Further to this, I dare not treat others the way -I- want to be treated, as I want to be loved without boundaries: emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical. Nearly everyone would object to being treated in this way (especially that last part).

The Golden Rule is not without its problem, mostly because it assumes that everyone wants to be treated in pretty much the same way.

I have found this is almost never the case.

The truth is most people want to be treated better than they are willing to treat others.

I always treat others as i want to be treated. I was raised in a good Christian family and that was a rule my family set for my brothers and I. If i get treated badly by a person i just treat that preson with love and at nite i pray for them.

I try very hard and work to treat others as I would want to be treated. I have found that when you do that, it is so gratifying later to know that you did not respond in a mean and cruel way, but rather with love as Jesus would do.

No, the statement isn't inverse and it really is proactive. you should take care of them the way you opt to be dealt with GIVEN A project. If i'm a jerk to you you should react the way you would wantt o be dealt with in case you've been performing like a jerk. per chance it really is to have the different individual also act like a jerk, yet I doubt it. also, there must be an abstraction about the Golden Rule. you would pick a particular lady to have her way with you regardless of what you're saying, yet in case you do an similar to her it really isn't any longer morally good, it really is rape and is undesirable. in case you universalize the guideline, it really is sparkling you do not opt to be raped by merely everybody, it really is a particular lady. interior of an similar way, you should take care of someone performing like jerk the way you desire any given individual ought to take care of you in case you've been performing like a jerk.
