Cassettes are on their way out because the sound quality was never very good anyway. The recording convenience that kept them going as a medium has been overtaken by CD-ROMs and PC hard-drives.

The sales of vinyl have actually increased over the last 5 years, as it produces the most 'natural' sound of any recorded medium.

CDs will be around for a long, long time, due to their robust nature and excellent sound quality. There will always be people to whom sound quality is more important than owning a nasty white plastic box and squawky earphones.

mp3s and iPods (or future variants thereof) will always be the choice of people who aren't bothered about sound quality, but just want to store lots of tunes they will never listen to. The poor build quality and reliability of all those type of players, will ensure the manufacturers will never go out of business.

I still remember getting my very first cassette player, my first tape was Slade in flame and i played it to death.
Ive got twenty or more compilation's cassettes that Ive taped from when Steve wright was on radio one and lots of others and pre recorded too... ahh the good old days !!.

I think Cd's will be around for a while yet tho ?.

Cassettes are like 8 tracks. Rare and hard to find. I don't know, with the proliferation of of MP3's, the cd may be next.
