In February after a month of being on birth control, I had a pain in my leg and completely convinced myself it was a blood clot but I had an ultrasound done on my legs and they came back clear. Then I started having chest pains and I was convinced I had a blood clot in my lungs. I had an EKG performed and a Stress Echocargiogram done and both came back perfect. My doctor says my oxygen in my lungs is good but put me on an inhaler due to inflammation of the lungs. I still feel bad, having chest pains and shortness of breath sometimes, but I think it could be anxiety. Does anyone else agree? I don't smoke, stopped birth control less than 30 days after starting it but I am about 15 pounds overweight. Am I just freaking myself out?

EKG and stress EKG aren't really good for blood clots in lungs but at least you know that your heart is perfectly healthy. The ultimate test for a lung embolism is ventilation-perfusion lung scan or a spiral-CT. However, since it was back in Feb. and you still have symptoms it is not a blood clot, as it would have dissolved shortly after the first incident.

It could be anxiety or asthma (inflammation) caused by stress, exersice or allergies especially if the inhaler (I'm guessing it's a β2 mimetic?) reliefs the symptoms. Have your doctor do a simple lung function test - spirometry or peak flow, it only takes 1-2 minutes.

A chest infection will cause chest pain and breathlessness. If you were prescribed an inhaler it is more likely to be asthma which often runs in fa-miles. Asthma is not just breathlessness, it is when the lining of the airways and lungs become inflamed and slightly swollen. This narrows the airways so make you feel a breathless and can cause chest pain. Allergies such as to dust, pollen, animal hair can often cause allergic reactions in people. Allergies and associated asthma can develop at any time of life.

with the work up the doctor did, yeah, you are freaking yourself out. And it is very likely that you have an anxiety disorder, and you could also have a touch of asthma. Keep using the inhaler as directed, and you may want to follow up with a psychiatrist, they know mental health medications and they can better refer you to the availble classes for learning coping skills to deal with anxiety.
