It is probably "dieseling", could be the gas that you use; try a different gas station or a higher octane gas...

Ignition timing might be retarded. Check it with a timing light at idle. Should be about 10 degrees BTDC.

Fuel mixture might be lean. Adjust carburetor idle mixture screws for best idle speed.

Could be hot carbon in cylinders. Might need to remove cylinder heads to remove the carbon.

More than likely yoyu have the timing too far advanced causing "dieseling". This can typically be remedied by declinating the distributor judiciously. To do this:
1. start your engine and let it warm up
2. loosen the retaining screw for the distrubuto shaft
3. turn the distributor counter clockwise slowly, taking note of the engine sound
4. when the engine firing evens out and slows to about 800RPM for manual transmissions or 700-750RPM for automatic transmissions tighten the distributor retaining screw/bolt
5. turn off engine

could be timing or could be carbon build up. Ford has a good carbon remover that can be slowly poured thru the carb with engine running or you can use tranny fluid or even water to remove carbon build up with out removing the heads. I would suggest the 1st thing to do is have the timing checked and make sure it is correct.

Sounds like the timing. Check and see it the distributor has moved or is worn. Also the time chain may be stretched.
