and why do they glow in the dark

Do you mean the pupils (black bits) get big?

When cats are 'angry' in the wild, it is usually because they are hunting or fighting. Their eyes are at maximum effectiveness when the pupils are dilated (enlarged), so this is what happens to a cat whenever they are angry/scared/stressed. They're getting themselves ready to deal with whatever is about to happen!

As for the 'glow in the dark' - that's the light reflecting off their retina (at the back of their eye). Humans get this to some extent, but it's not very noticeable because our pupils are so small. A cat's large pupils enable more light to enter the eye, which is what enables them to see in the dark.

Cats and many other semi-nocturnal animals have a reflective coating on the back of their retinas. This coating reflects what light is available to help "amplify" the light and thus allow them to see better in the dark. As for a cat's eyes getting "bright", when a cat is on the defensive their eyes to open wider and see to be larger. Usually the pupils dilate too which would make your cat's eyes look larger. I'm not sure of the reason why this happens other than it serves as a warning to other cats and animals to back off.

Previous posters are correct. Cats are nocturnal and because of that, like owls, their eyes are made to reflect light from even the smallest sources to illuminate in the dark so they can see. Their eyes get bigger not to warn other animals, but to pull in even more light so they can see even better. Especially when on the defense, they need the best sight possible so opening the pupils fully allows them to see farther and better.

adrenaline causes cats' eyes to dialate and as they are reflective they will captue more light that way.
