hey, i recently became a buddhist, buddhism is very cool, you take as much or as little as you want from it, and its not about money, you dont pray you meditate, or if you dont want to you dont have to, i was at a buddhist convention for those in the armed forces, ( i know sounds ironic, but there is place in every walk of life for every religion!) and its not strictly a religion is a philosophy, it accepts every other religion, so much so that Sri Lanka which is currently the seat of buddhism i beleive has 31 public holidays in order to celebrate all the other religious festivals (including christmas! YAY!!!) and you dont "join" there is no hand of Buddha that comes down and says,
"my child, you have been studying the four noble truths and the eightfold path for ten years you are now a buddhist!"
its a decision you make in your own self, and whan i first called my self a buddhist i felt like i had woken from a deep sleep, sounds corny i know but its the truth. Part of the Buddhist tradition ( you mentioned helping people through church, well you can go to a monastry and help the monks, nuns and peole they help) is charity as you may or may not know buddhsit monks traditionally only have one meal a day and thats what they given from the public, i think if monks walked the streets of the UK they may starve but hey! oh and if you go travleing in thailand, sri lanka where ever buddhism is, which is generally most countires the monastries will put you up for free, hey its hardly en suite but its clean.
now i must also say this, why do you feel the need to have a religion? you can help peole in many ways other than choosing a religion, if you seek spiritual answers to spiritual questions then look at religion but if you need to fill a gap, you may need to ask why you need a gap filling.
and lastly, on an up note, you can be who ever you want to be and you dont need to give money or sign any dotted lines.
The mind is everything. What you think you become.
a quote buddha
good luck

I am afraid that you will not find what you are looking for among the so-called major 3, Judaism, Christianity, or Islam.
Although you might look into a branch of Christianity called the Quakers, I believe that they are very liberal in their thinking. They were the first group of people to truly speak out against slavery.
Buddhism might be worthy of looking into, and since I am a Witch, I have to at least suggest that you look into some of the various Pagan religions, no pressure, just suggestion.
Spiritualism is interesting, I don't know that much about it, but it sounds like something worth looking into as well.
I think that all of these that I have mentioned pretty much fit into your "needs", they are accepting, don't require proselytizing, encourage volunteering, helping others, and don't really care what other people believe. (they are none oppressive).
One suggestion, don't stop at the first one you find. Continue your search, you may find one that is better for you, or you may find that the first one is best. Keep your options and mind open.
Be Well.I wish you luck in your search

Personally I would have to say christian but just find the right denomination for you as it varies so much. You are free, there are hardly any real set rules. No one from my denomination goes round knocking on people's doors, I think that's just the fundamentalists. You don't have to read the bible, it helps but it is your own choice. You are loved, at peace and in a community with other Christians. Christians are taught to respect those on other beliefs and we respect people's choices. Helping others is a central part of Christianity and a church is such a good place for this with a range of opportunities of all ages from children to old age. The money in communion is given to the running of the church and charities but then as Christians don't have to go to church or donate, and many choose not to, it is not compulsory.

It sounds as if you are confused about why people have a religion! Well, they do because that's what they believe in, in the first place not just because it was the only religion that didn't ask you to give money or read your Bible carefully!
You just want a religion to be around you! you can't have that being a buddist or Catholic or Christian or Sikh is hard! That's why some people change religion's!

i truly think that christianity is a good religion
you dont really have to do much
the money taking is called an offering, those who dont have money can give time.
you dont have to go around knocking on peoples doors, those who dont want to work, dont really have to although it is good to do something.
it teaches what is in the bible not what is written by man.
we will listen and hear what you say and will respect you,
we do not make you do anything, you dont have to read the bible all the time, just when you think the time is right.
when you worry or are sad, just tell god in prayer, spill out all your problems and beleive me,if you really mean what you say,one by one your problems will disapear.
well in the end it is up to you.

It's difficult to offer an unbiased opinion if you practice a particular religion, so I can only say from personal experience Paganism offers the liberation you are looking for. But it doesn't suit everyone (of course), but it may be something you may want to consider reading up on.

I'm sure you don't need one but if you really feel you do, why not go with the church of the flying spaghetti monster ( www.venganza.org ), it's free, its funny, you don't need to be morally strict, and every Friday is a religious holiday...
If you don't think that's the one, try Humanism, or if you are still attached to old methods of belief, there may be an option in the unitarian universalists, though I'm not sure they have any churches in the UK...

Sounds like Confucianism would work for you. I don't know if they have a Holy text - as most religions do - but you may want to check it out. It was founded on principles of love, peace and respect for fellow man and also beasts.

Well, I was with you till you mentioned the money thing. They're all gonna ask for money. Shoot, your bowling league or quilting group or PTA is gonna ask for money. You seem to want to join a religion which doesn't require anything of you, and I'm just not familiar with one of those.

Try looking into Wicca. It's peaceful, doesn't force it's beliefs down others throats, and doesn't say that if you don't follow it you're going to suffer for all eternity. It's a religion where you can feel free to express yourself and your creativity.
