Because that were the case then we would be like puppets. God presents us with choices. For instance we have the choice whether to believe in him or not. If we do, then we must have faith in him to do what he can for us. Think of prayer as more than just praying, think of it as having a discussion with a friend or father. He will always be there for us.

That's a good question - I think it would mean that He would be messing with our free will. I think He gave that to us in order for us to exercise autonomy in our thinking and feeling. If He was always doing things for us, when would we get to be ourselves?
I also think that prayers show that we are true believers - being in communication with Him and calling on His name is a necessary part of faith.

You have not because you ask not. A baby needs a diaper change or is hungry, but they still have enough smarts about them to let the parent know.

Why is the question always:
Why doesen't God do things this way, or that?
The question is never about US perhaps conforming to His ways.
A tad arrogant, don't you think?

Dear scapegoat,

God is omniscient and knows evrything. However, we pray because He commands us to pray.

It's that pesky thing called Free will. God wants you to ask for his help and have faith that he will resolve.

He knows what we need before we ask, but he wants us to ask because he wants a relationship with us. He wants us to come to him willingly and of our own choosing. He wants our fellowship.
