For starters, if the cat is scratching/biting at the would at all, GET HIM TO STOP. Call local pet shops and ask them if they have a collar you can put on him to stop picking at it. Two, get something to clean the wounds out with...the pet shop should also help you with that.
My biggest advice would be to call around at different pet shops and maybe even vets(though half the time they say we cant do anything unless you bring it in, sometimes you'll find that one thats helpful) and ask them for advice or any information they can give you. Good Luck and I hope your cat gets better!

I can explain to whidgette why people don't understand the meaning of 'can't afford the vet right now' - it's because we can't understand how someone can afford a computer and the internet but not afford to treat a sick animal.
Also, the reason vets say they can't help without seeing the animal - IT'S BECAUSE IT ISN'T POSSIBLE. How can someone prescribe treatment without knowing what the problem is?!
Now then, sacrificialcow - you've already left this cat to be uncomfortable for months on end, it's time to FIND some money for a vet so that you can get this sorted out. You've probably made it worse AND more expensive for yourself by leaving it so long.
Things it could be:
+ abcesses (which are areas of infection)
+ skin infection caused by allergies
+ flea allergic dermatitis
+ skin cancer (my mouse had it - started off with one wound that never got better and then spread all over)
+ self mutilation for any of the above reasons
'Putting ointment on' does not cure any of theses problems. You need to find the CAUSE of the problem before you can know how to treat it!
Please at least take the cat to the vet to find out what is wrong. If money's an issue, do it before you make it even more expensive for yourself.

it's possible that the ointment you are using could make an original problem worse. cat anatomy and human anatomy are very different.
perhaps you could call some vets, explain your situation, and one may offer to treat your cat at a fee you can afford. Maybe you can also find out what it might be and what you should do on the phone.
make sure you keep your cat indoors, until this is resolved.

You'll need to have a vet see the wounds - he would probably know by looking at them what it is.
You can try applying for care credit to see if you can get the money for a vet. If not, then you'll have to either call the humane society in your area to find out if they know of a vet who will be able to help you.
I wouldn't wait though, he sounds like he could be very uncomfortable.

It sounds like the sores have abscessed & he should be on antibiotics. Especially if they are oozing. Try pouring some peroxide on them, that will help. My cat had the same thing a few weeks ago & even the vet tried to pour peroxide on him ( I say tried because he was throwing a fit). The vet is the best thing but peroxide will help & it doesn't hurt at all. It will just bubble up & then you know its working.

Let me put it to you like this, WITHOUT A VET YOU CAT COULD DIE!
This could be an allergie problem, or a bite of some kind. Either way if it has been there for over a month, it is probably spreading infection throughout the cats body, and this is in most cases fatel if it's not taken care of!

A sore that does not get better needs veterinary care, see if the local Humane Society can help you there, or a vet with a payment plan.
Bottom line is with pets, stuff like this happens, if we cannot proide them with the ccare they need, as hard as it is one needs to think about rehoming the animal into a home that can provide the care it needs.

Could be diabetes, you need to get him checked out, and if you don't have the money to get him to a vet, you should do what's right for him and give him up for adoption, or check if you have a local animal rescue mission, that could help you look at your options.

you can sign over the rights to your cat to the vet. I know i may be hard, but i think It would be less hard then having a cat die. Good luck.

I wish I could help, but honestly a vet is the only one who really can. Please see this link on ideas for when you're having trouble affording vet care - perhaps it may help:
