ok, ive asked this before and still dont understand, some say that oem software doesn't come with the windows cd rom
and retail comes with the cd rom, which makes sense
but then others are saying the opposite, can some1 explain it please

OEM (original equipment manufacturer) software is designed for installation into a "new" computer, IE, like a Dell or a Compaq, or one that you have built. It is just as functional as a Retail or boxed version.

Now for the down side. OEM software does not come with any support from Microsoft. It can only be installed from it's original CD-KEY once. Any installations beyond the original will require that you call Microsoft for an updated product key. This is no big deal and only takes about 5 or 6 minutes. It can on be installed as a "new" installation and not as an upgrade. IE, you must install to a freshly formatted or new hard drive. Or to a separate partition on your existing hard drive.

There can be other minor differences depending on who the software was originally designed for, but I doubt that you would ever notice any of these differences.

I use OEM software allot when building machines for my customers. It is a little less expensive and this savings I pass on to the customer.

Just make sure that you purchase your OEM software from a known, reputable supplier. Be careful that you are not buying something that is pirated. If you stick with folks like "Tiger Direct", "Computer Geeks", "ZipZoomFly" or any other trusted supplier that you know and have dealt with in the past, then there should be no problems that I can see.

OK...when you buy windows xp from the store, it's called a retail version. it has just windows xp on it. when it comes with your new computer, it's oem. oem is original equipment manufacturer. other programs are usually added to the windows xp disc by the computer companies (dell, gateway, etc). this is what makes it an oem version, and why the operating system disc will say on it "for use with dell (or gateway, etc) only"
