I have had apartments in the past with my daughters father and he ran my credit into the ground. I am now a single mother that lives with my mom and she and I are ready for my to move out. I don't have alot of money to spend on rent and I have had past instinces with apartments such as breaking leases. What should I do?

Be up front with the landlord or management company when you go to rent. As the housing market gets softer, they're going to be more likely to want to rent the building. They may ask for an extra month as a deposit or something, but generally you can work something out. Tell them that you lived with someone who ruined your credit. Tell them you're going to be good for it. If you're up front with them and tell them this BEFORE they run your credit report, that goes a long way.

There are several apartments in different areas that offer "second chance" apartments. What that means is that they are sort of like banks that offer another chance even though you owe another or have bad credit. Your best best would be to seek the help of an apartment locator. They will do a search to meet Your criteria, and generally charge a small amount, or work for the apartment complexes and they cover the locator fee. Another option may be to find a rental house that is either owned by an individual, or that looks more to a persons income rather then their credit. There are places like these in both situations, it just takes a little extra looking. As well as sometimes having to provide a larger deposit and first months rent.

Daisy,
This is a dificult situation to be in. But it is not a death sentence.
I suggest that you apply to 2-3 apartment complexes that you can afford.

Don't say anthing about past problems unless THEY bring it up. Chances are sometimes Apt agents are too busy to check backgrounds thoroughly before giving a decison (good for you).

Worse case scenario, you can always get into an affordable home using a "rent to own" deal. (classified ads, or real estate agencies can help find these deals.)

These types of deals requires NO CREDIT CHECK, and with very little up front money you can move into the home within a couple days.

A certain amount of monthly rent you pay will be set aside by the landlord as a possible future down payment if you choose to buy the home. This also gives you time to fix your credit for a year or two.
I hope everything works out for you. Good luck.

You need to start with a HUD apartment or an apartment owned by an individual, not a company. You can try renting from a complex, which is usually company ran, but if you have bad credit they might not rent to you or they may require a large down payment.

Word of advice: never let a man run your credit into the ground again----it will only cause you a world of misery.

Good luck!

In January I moved to another state. I've got a history of medical bills due to testicular cancer (long story) and nobody likes my credit at all. (Least of all, me!)

One of the apartments that turned me down for a lease (because of my credit) mentioned that I should call some company called Relocation Central to help find me an apartment. I thought there had to be a catch, but I decided to try anyway.

As Scott (above answer guy) recommended, I told them up front where I was running into issues, and what the issues were. The lady was able to help me - she called around to find the best apartments with the amenities that I wanted - she found me several apartments that would work with me before I even went in to talk to them. Plus the company didn't charge me a dime. All they wanted was for me to put down on the application that I was referred by them. It's sponsored by a used furniture company, and they give you a gift certificate to use at their stores. I'm a small business owner, and moving is crap because of the time I had to spend dealing with things. These guys saved me a bunch of time.

Normally these loans are more expensive than those offered to borrowers with good credit. The interest rates are higher because the lender bears higher risk. Adverse credit loans have more stringent repayment criteria than normal loans. Skip one payment on a bad credit loan and your rate will rise and you may even have to face a foreclosure.
