Okay, so I used to use Microsoft Office Word but the trial on my new computer expired so now I have Microsoft Works Word. I can't edit the documents I made using Microsoft Office so I want to transfer them to Microsoft Works. I want to know how to do that. I know it's possible because I've done it before, I just forget how. Please, help.

It may depend on what version of Works you have.
Works 7 and later should be able to open the doc file type (Word). This is from Microsoft:
To open a file in a specific format in Works, follow these steps:
1. On the File menu, click Open.

Note In the Works 7.0 calendar module, click Import.
2. In the Files of Type box, click the format of the file that you want to open.
3. Locate the file that you want, click the file that you want, and then click Open.

To save a file in a specific format in Works 7.0, follow these steps:
1. On the File menu, click Save As.

Note In the Works 7.0 calendar module, click Export.
2. In the Save as type box, click the format that you want.
3. Type a name for your file in the File name box, and then click Save.

But to have a real office suite with compatible file types, download and install Open Office. You can setup OO to use the Word file extension, doc by default. It also can open Excel and Powerpoint files.

If you are able to open the document then you should click Save As.. and save the document as an rtf (rich text format). You can do that by selecting the Save as type in the dialogue box at the bottom, and then look for the rtf extension.

Just open them in Word...

If they don't open you saved them in too new a version for Word to cope with. You need to move them to a computer with the right version of Word and save them into a version that works with your version of Word.

Or go buy Office.

Or try Open Office.

I'm guessing that you can't open them because you no longer have Word. If you had, you could have opened them and saved them as text files which could have been opened in Works.

You can try converting - there is a free online converter at:

The easiest way is to open them in office 2007 then save as an earlier format.

Install and use Abiword. http://www.abisource.com/

It's free. It will be able to open your Word DOC files which you can then save in a format that Works can use.
