Well i had a cat, she was older tho, 16 years old. She started doing that and wouldn't stop. I was told that when a cat does this, it means that the cat was sick or dieing. Now being that my cat was full grown and old, she was probably sick and dieing.
Yours being just a kitten, there could be a slight chance of the cat being sick. But before going to the vet, make sure...
the the litter is always clean
or
change the type of litter
or
if its a closed in box, change it to an open cat litter box.
If those don't work, the i suggest your bring it to the vet.

You might try a different litter box (bigger or with/without a lid - whatever is different than what you have now).
I would aslo try a different litter like the pine pellets. Cats are very curious, the change might be such a novelty for kitty that he starts going in the box again.
Also, make sure you keep it really clean. My cats LOVE a clean litter box, they run right to it the second I finish cleaning. The FIRST thing I'm buying when I hit the lotto is one of those automatic litter boxes. LOL

I had the same problem with my cat, but she was female and not fixed. She always used the litter box until she had kittens and as soon as they started walking, she started pooping near the litter box instead of in it, but she kept peeing in it. I thought since the kittens were running around and I weren't litter-trained yet that maybe since she saw them using the bathroom outside of it she thought she could, too. I could never get her to use it again so I had to put her outside. I got all of the kittens trained and kept one, but eventually she started peeing in the floor. Pooped in the litter box still. I kept the litter box clean, though. Cats are frustrating :(

I'm sorry that people are answering you rudely. I don't know why some people are just so - well - rude.
Anyway, is he doing it right next to the box? Do you have more than one cat, but only one box? Is the box clean when he does it?
If the box is dirty, some cats won't use it. If he is going right next to it he is trying to tell you something. It's the "I know what I'm supposed to do, but...." message. It's dirty. He doesn't like the litter. He doesn't like the location.

I had a cat do that. She was VERY picky about her litter I had to scoop it out twice a day in order to get her to go in the litter pan.
So 1) try cleaning our her litter pan more often.
2) discipline her when she doesn't go in the litter pan. I took my cat's nosed and rubbed it the mess and then put her in the litter pan. after about 3 days of that she always went in the litter pan.
Edit: I read some of the other answers. So to clairify myself I didn't rub it hard enough for get the material on the cat's nose I just got her close enough to have to smell it. The combination of foul smell and the restraining hold I had on the cat (which did have claws) was enough to convince her. I miss my kitty she passed away about 10 years ago. I had her for about 18 years.

Make sure the litter box is cleaned reguarly and if possible have 2 litter boxes. I have 3 cats and 4 litter boxes, 2 covered and 2 uncovered. Try and get extra large litter boxes also, a cat hates being squashed up.

My cats used to do the same thing, so I moved it to where they were going so in sence they would go in the cat box when they thought they were going on the floor, and it worked. So i sugest that you just move the cat box to where they are going and just keep it there and see if it works, if not then I would try a diffrent kitty litter or even a new cat box, some cats are very picky on where they do there deed!!! My 2 cats do.

Un spayed or neutered cats often try this and supply up after surgical treatment, they are marking territory and supply up as quickly as they are neutered/spayed... if that's not it, and seeing she basically does it at night, is it achieveable to restrict her in a small room like a tub room with a sparkling clutter field??? basically at night?? additionally the clutter suggestion is a physically powerful one, cats are specially circumstances fussy approximately this. some do not basically like the scented litters .. u ought to test with this.. stable success, God bless, and thank u for being concerned approximately this kitty... Dont understand what her historic past replaced into yet she would have found out this habit some the place else. pass on the particular cat websites like "for the affection of cats" at yahoo... there are additionally others with some very knowledgeable individuals available that ought to choose to help with greater ideas... =^--^=

How clean is the litter box?
If it is clean and scooped daily, then the litter may not be to his liking (how often to scoop? -- how often do we flush our toilets?) .
Try a second litter box with the same litter -- if he still poops outside the box, then put one of those poops in the new litter box, and cover it partially. If he STILL poops outside the box, then try using a different litter in that box.
