Liberals are far smarter and superior than Republicans (and the vast majority of everyday working Americans). Why is it then that liberals, being the good stewards of the environment they claim to be, are not DELIGHTED by the cost of gasoline? This is obviously a disincentive to burn fossil fuel needlessly. Why then are the liberal superiorists so angry?

Furthermore, how is Hollywood supposed to get their cocaine from South America if they don't have fuel for the jets that supply it to them?

Sorry Arbgre, with all the talk of new taxes and "redistribution" of oil exploration company profits the libs have run Halliburton out of the United States. They are now headquartered in the United Arab Emirates.

Conservation is for the common man... Not the Limousine Liberals or self-proclaimed Hollywood Elite.

Or so many of them will have you believe.

I just read about some actress in the paper today that is having a sitcom she has been on for seven years canceled. Her main concern? "Does this mean I will now have to fly coach and not First Class?"

Neither conservative nor liberal should be looking to the government to do anything about the high cost of fuel. Everyone knows the downside, but there is an upside. It will spur efficiencies which will leave the environment cleaner and stretch the long term supply out further. So if fuel cost is high, but not too high to wreck the economy the overall long term effect is good.
Many liberals are indeed delighted at that. What the government should do is rather than addressing the cost of fuel directlly, invest (through money and incentives) in making fossil fuel relient processes more efficient and promoting alternatives. it will be easier to legislate higher fuel economy standards when everyone stops buying 15mpg SUV's

But the downside needs addressed. People who will not be able to afford heat for their home will need help, but the record profits taken in by the oil companies do not need any protection from ordinary taxes. Liberals would do better to end subsidies and special tax breaks to the fossil fuel industry rather than look to slap on a windfall profit tax.

First off you do know that your party hates you right? Second if you think that is the motto for the Democratic party, what would be the motto for the Republican party? We'll think for you, don't waste your time with thought?

Third, if you think that is the reason for Halliburton leaving the US and moving to Dubai, you need to learn facts. They are leaving because there is no doubt that Congress is going to pass a law prohibiting US companies from profiting in business actions with enemies as is Halliburton who currently works directly with Iran. Funny this never gets mentioned. They do it through a Cayman Islands subsidiary company, which under current law is still legal (thanks to the Republicans smashing what was to change that right before they took control of Congress in the late 90's). Halliburton and I quote "will no longer continue new business with Iran or any other enemy because of the new laws that will go into place." Asked would they stop if there were no laws..and I quote "Halliburton will no longer continue to seek new ventures with Iran or an other enemies due to the new laws that will be in place".. They since after that have set up to move operations to Dubai where they can't be touched by the US.

We are not delighted that since most of us cannot afford hybrid cars and since we are dependent on Oil the fact that they are raping the hard working american on gas prices is not even close to fair.

One thing is apparent, Democrats appear to be smarter than Republicans because we did not vote for George W.

As far as the cost of gasoline, you need to ask your faithful leaders, George W and Cheney, whose comrades are Exxon/Mobile, Shell, and other corporate price gougers and war profiteers.

Perhaps you don't care that scientist have warned about global warming, but this is a good reason for you to live in New York when it becomes flooded.

The Hollywood comment is stupid on its face. Perhaps you have not heard that when a person uses the term "all" then it is immediately dismissed as not true. "All" and "None" are not plausible.

Most Progressives/ Democrats do not claim to be superior, but evidently we read more.

" Liberals are far smarter and superior than Republicans "

Finally you come to the light !

"are not DELIGHTED by the cost of gasoline"

Its price gouging and the president does nothing about it..

The world doesnt revolve around you, the price of gasoline is hard on the average commuters but very hard especially on the trucking/transportation & other business, business has to shut down & people lose jobs .. but you know its nothing to worry about, they are small people I'm sure you Republicans got more things worry about.

" Furthermore, how is Hollywood supposed to get their cocaine from South America if they don't have fuel for the jets that supply it to them? "

Dont be stupid, they just walk through the border.. They have checkpoints as in water stations in the deserts so their drug runners could sip some water to refuel their energy, not to mention the tunnels underground and submarine they tried to use. The drug dealers are very innovative, a jet is a last resort.
The United States border policy is to let these drug runners go to prevent deadly confrontation, remember what happen to the 2 border patrols that tried to stop them? they are in jail.

Please dont be stupid, liberals and republicans both use drugs, but I don't, what about you?

The problem is not with the cost but with where the profits resulting from those 'artificially raised' prices go - to the same oil companies underpaying royalties they pay to extract that same oil from government property owned by all of us.

The oil companies who also throw tantrums about not getting subsidies from the government to find more oil.

The same oil companies who pollute our shared environment with not a second thought about it.

The same oil companies who refuse to secure or otherwise upgrade their refineries but use their age as just another excuse to artificially jack-up prices and thereby their outrageous profits.

Where in any of that is their willingness to help fight terrorism by helping to share the costs of our so-called war against it - in Iraq or anywhere else?!

To semi-quote the Gipper, "It's the economy, stupid!"

High gasoline prices are killing the middle class and small businesses.

Yes, I said killing.

You must not be as clever as your shoddy attempt at cynicism shows.

While the Dow skyrockets on news of big mergers, thousands of small businesses with no press coverage are facing the stark reality of hiding ever increasing fuel costs, costs that consumers have no viable means of paying.

Do you want to live in a country where the only brick and mortar stores are Targets, KMarts and WalMarts?

You may want to pay $60 every three days to fill your gas tank. But I don't! And I don't count on the republicans to do anything to change this anytime soon!

Fuel is the lifeblood of industry, without fuel import/export collapses, agriculture collapses.

Our standard of life, is highly dependent upon fuel, however conservation is much different than elimination.

I hope the price of gas hits $50 a gallon.

Then maybe the American love affair with automobiles will end.

And the Middle East will be reduced to selling sand and camel meat.
